SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a continuous process for the same reason that life itself is a continuous process. Life has many requirements to continue-on from the basics of nutrition, health, exercise, hygiene, etc. Likewise, SEO requires regular ongoing processes to maintain visibility and growth. Specifically, a website is only as good today as it relates to all of the other websites it competes with. As is the case with human beings, websites live in a competitive world and the competition is not just sitting there doing nothing. They seek the highest positions and the most visibility, traffic and sales. So they are doing things i.e. SEO and all that goes with it to be the highest rated (most relevant) website compared to all of the others. If you want SEO to be a finite process, get to #1, page 1 of all of the search engines for all of your keywords and then convince the rest of the world to stop doing anything about it. Good Luck!
With this backdrop, here are the most important factors in SEO that require a continuous, even dogmatic, approach to compete effectively.
- Keyword Research (choosing the right keywords): few recognize that their “keyword universe” is in constant change and that over 60% of all searches are 4 or more words. So knowing on the granular level what searchers are typing is critical on a continuing basis.
- Content: This goes hand-in-hand with keyword research because it is keyword research that drives the selection of content topics and titles.
- Backlink Growth: It is the quality and quantity of Backlinks that are the biggest determinants ultimately of who ranks where on Google et al. How do you get great Backlinks? Great Content, what else?
- Link Velocity: Remember you are competing so your competitors potentially could be good at getting good Backlinks as well. But by producing and syndicating enough content you can attain a higher link velocity as compared to your competitors i.e. getting more backlinks over defined periods of time than your rivals. So, you must know your link velocity. Do you know yours?
- “The Google” – Google is constantly tweaking and reworking its vaunted algorithms to perfect its ranking process. Just another key reason that SEO is forever; a never ending marathon of competition for visibility, traffic and conversions.
Clearly, SEO is continuous, never ending requiring patience, discipline, strong processes and serious commitments throughout.

Alway use refferal to see if the company you have found are any good.
Me for example only charge my klients in Denmark if they get results
Just my opinion
Henning,
I agree with you on references; always check legitimate references while looking for a good SEO company that can also show you live, deep results including ranks and actual conversions / ROI.
However, I do not agree on solely “charging if one gets results.” SEO and Internet Marketing is a type of marketing, nobody can argue that. And “RESULTS” is such a vague term; what do you consider a “result”? Just being able to acquire a rank? A certain amount of sales, conversion rate or revenue?
Here at Optimum7, we do not give guarantees for “Ranking on Google”. Because Google actually says in its guidelines that “No SEO Company can guarantee results in terms of ranks!” However, we do guarantee increased traffic, business and leads. If you are a great online marketer, why should you provide a service and wait to get paid? There are too many variables in SEO that prevent this kind of method. SEO is a complicated and expensive process if you want stable, long term results and success.
