Background

The Business

The Felt Pod is an ecommerce retailer selling wool felt, felt balls and shapes, fabrics, and craft supplies for personal projects and small craft businesses. Its products span different colors, thicknesses, patterns, and formats, which makes catalog organization central to how customers find materials for their work. The company’s Volusion store held an extensive product catalog and years of customer and order records. We were engaged to migrate the store to Shopify, adapt a client-selected theme to the brand, and prepare the storefront and store operations for launch.

The Brief

The Objective

Move The Felt Pod to Shopify with its catalog and sales history intact, giving the team a store it could manage and develop as the business grew. The new storefront needed to make craft supplies easy to browse and purchase on desktop and mobile, using the client-selected theme. Existing links also had to keep taking customers to the products and information they expected after the move.

The Stakes

Key Business Challenges

1
Keeping historical records usable in Shopify

Volusion and Shopify organize store data differently. Product fields, customer details, and historical order information needed accurate mapping so the transferred records stayed complete and useful for day-to-day reference.

2
Connecting old URLs to the right pages

Existing product, category, and informational URLs followed Volusion’s structure. Changing platforms introduced the risk that links from search results and other websites would stop reaching the intended pages.

3
Fitting the catalog into the selected theme

The selected Shopify theme set the boundaries for page layouts and navigation. Within those limits, The Felt Pod’s material categories and product groupings needed to stay easy to browse, starting from the homepage.

4
Making room for mobile product selection

On mobile, customers needed space to review product information and make selections while keeping purchase controls within reach. The layout also had to accommodate trust information without crowding those interactions.

The strategic challenge

The Felt Pod’s catalog had to work within Shopify’s data structure and the selected theme’s shopping experience. Product information needed to stay complete through the transfer and fit the layouts customers would use to browse and buy. We addressed these requirements through field mapping, migration checks, and theme adjustments, with store operations prepared for the same launch.

Approach

The Strategy

1
Product, customer & order migration

We mapped Volusion’s fields to Shopify and transferred the data in batches, checking record counts and field accuracy throughout the migration. Product records included descriptions, images, SKUs, pricing, and inventory. Customer names, email addresses, and billing and shipping addresses were transferred alongside historical orders, with order details, timestamps, and associated product information retained for reference in the new platform.

2
Content migration & URL redirects

The About Us page, shipping and return policies, and other informational content were recreated in Shopify, with formatting adjusted to fit its page structure. A redirect map connected legacy product, category, and content URLs to their corresponding Shopify pages. We implemented these as 301 redirects so visitors using old links reach the relevant destinations and search engines can identify the replacement URLs.

3
Shopify theme implementation

We adapted the selected Shopify theme to The Felt Pod’s brand and craft supplies catalog. Navigation and homepage sections were organized to help customers browse the material categories and find relevant products. Styling and element placement were adjusted within the theme’s existing layouts to keep the store’s appearance consistent across shopping pages.

4
Mobile & purchase flow optimization

The mobile storefront organized category groups and product listings for smaller screens, with filter and sort controls above the collection grid. Sticky CTAs kept purchase actions within reach as customers browsed, and the soft add-to-cart experience supported adding products during shopping.

5
Store operations setup

We set up payment methods and shipping and tax settings so Shopify could collect payments and calculate order totals. Customer email notifications completed the operational setup, preparing The Felt Pod to handle new orders from launch.

Outcome

The Results

Key outcomes
  • Approximately 8,400 products migrated with titles, descriptions, images, SKUs, pricing, and inventory retained.
  • Approximately 22,000 customer accounts and 32,000 historical orders transferred, preserving customer details, addresses, and order information.
  • Informational and policy pages recreated in Shopify with formatting adapted to the new storefront.
  • 301 redirects connecting legacy product, category, and content URLs to their Shopify destinations.
  • Client-selected Shopify theme delivered with brand styling, navigation, and homepage layouts adapted to The Felt Pod’s catalog.
  • Mobile and purchase flow improvements, including sticky CTAs, a soft add-to-cart experience, trust elements, and refined CTA placement.
  • Payment, shipping, tax, and email notification setup completed for launch.
Business impact

Historical customer and order records sit in Shopify alongside new sales, so The Felt Pod’s team can review previous purchases when handling customer inquiries. Shoppers using existing links still reach the relevant products and information, with purchase actions kept accessible on mobile. The team now runs day-to-day operations, from payment processing to order notifications, on a single platform built around the size and structure of its current catalog, clear of the limitations of the legacy Volusion setup.

Strategic outcome

The Felt Pod’s Shopify site gives the team a starting point for developing how it presents and sells its craft supplies. As the range expands, new materials and seasonal collections can appear in category navigation and homepage merchandising. Future improvements can follow the needs of the growing catalog, with the adapted theme providing the structure for those updates.

The Felt Pod launches on Shopify with nothing left to reconcile: sales history, customer records, and search rankings all carried through the same validated migration. The team inherits a platform built for the catalog’s current size, with room to grow it well past the ceiling Volusion had become.
