The Business

MedixSelect.com is an online retailer offering health supplements. To optimize its online operations and bolster its digital presence, the company strategically transitioned to the BigCommerce store. This transition encompassed several critical components, including data migration, custom template design, trial offer page integration, and the implementation of the Optimum7 Connector. In addition, it included other essential deliverables. This case study provides a comprehensive overview of the entire migration process, detailing each critical step and its significance in the overall project.

The Objective

The project involved several key deliverables:

  • Data Migration: This included migrating Products, Options, Option Categories, Categories, Customers, Orders, Order History, Info Pages, and 301 Redirects.
  • Custom Template Design: Designing a custom template to support custom functionality and integration.
  • Trial Offer Page Design and Integration: Creating a custom functionality and template structure on BigCommerce for the Trial Offer Page.
  • Optimum7 Connector: Setting up the Optimum7 Connector to communicate between BigCommerce, WorldPay, and Netsuite.
  • Tag Manager Admin: Designing a basic admin for MedixSelect to track the sources of orders.
  • Custom Daily Reports: Building daily reports to provide information to establish campaigns.
  • Ongoing BA and QA Retainer: Providing support for any additional requests from the Medix Select Team.
  • 3PL API Integration: Supporting any possible API integrations with a 3PL provider.
  • Data Cleanup: Cleaning up the data excess and unnecessary data that was taking up too much storage.

The Strategy

  • Data Migration: The initial phase of the project involved migrating all critical data to the new BigCommerce store. This comprehensive migration included 23 products, 500 options, 5 option categories, 5 categories, 500,000 customers, 660,000 orders, order history, info pages (such as ‘About Us’), and 301 redirects. This step was crucial to ensure that all essential data was accurately transferred to the new platform. This set a solid foundation for the project’s subsequent phases.

  • Custom Template Design: Medix Health LLC supplied a brand guidelines document, which Optimum7 used to create a custom template that supported the necessary custom functionalities and integrations. This included implementing the client’s logo and brand guideline details, adjusting the navigation elements and site width as per the client’s preference, and implementing all content provided by the client (Homepage, About Us, Contact Us, Customer Service).

  • Trial Offer Page Design and Integration: Optimum7 developed a custom functionality and template structure on BigCommerce to enable the “Trial Offer Page” for Medix Select. This structure allowed the Medix Select Team to manage all products from the BigCommerce Admin Panel. It also connected the Trial Offer Pages to WorldPay for tokens via the Optimum7 Connector. This setup enabled the dynamic selection of products to promote the free trial. Optimum7 implemented this “one-page order” functionality that currently does not exist on Bigcommerce. The layout of this one-page trial subscription order page on Bigcommerce is similar to Clickfunnels. This also includes an upsell page right after the initial order page.

  • Optimum7 Connector: The Optimum7 Connector facilitates communication between BigCommerce, WorldPay, and NetSuite. It transmits payment information from the checkout page to WorldPay. It uses the WorldPay iFrame to collect customer card details and send billing and credit card information to WorldPay. The Optimum7 Connector then retrieved the token information from WorldPay, and upon successful initial payment, created the order in BigCommerce Orders via API. Orders were then stored in BigCommerce and pushed to NetSuite ERP through Celigo. The Optimum7 Connector pushes token information to NetSuite ERP for recurring subscriptions. NetSuite ERP manages existing subscriptions.

  • Tag Manager Admin: Optimum7 created a basic admin interface for MedixSelect to track order sources, similar to their existing Edge system. This involved using Google Tag Manager to tag all URLs and utilizing three tracking parameters for order source tracking. Optimum7 also migrated existing sources for BigCommerce compatibility.

  • Custom Daily Reports: A system was developed to track all orders from landing pages, build daily reports, and provide essential information for campaign establishment. This system updates staff notes with the three tracking parameters parsed and stored from the order source. Reports were then sent daily, weekly, or monthly as emails to a designated set of admins.

  • Ongoing BA and QA Retainer: An ongoing support retainer was established for any additional requests from the Medix Select Team. This retainer also covers any Change of Scope or Functionality Consulting should the project requirements change.

  • 3PL API Integration: A retainer was established to support any potential API integration with a 3PL provider as requested. This integration occurred between BigCommerce and the 3PL provider.

  • Data Cleanup: The final step involved a thorough data cleanup to ensure all data was accurate and up-to-date, ready for use in the new BigCommerce store. This step was crucial to ensure the integrity of the data and the smooth operation of the online store.

Challenges and Solutions

Challenges faced during the project and the solutions implemented:

  • Upsell Page Implementation: The client had an existing upsell system on their order confirmation page and needed a similar system implemented on the new platform. The challenge was to create a system where, upon opening the order confirmation page, if an upsell product was defined, a “Special Offer” section would appear. If the customer wanted to benefit from this offer, they would be directed to the FTO page for a one-click purchase. The shipping-billing information from the previous sale needed to be automatically filled in, and the client did not want the customer to re-enter their credit card information.
Solution: Optimum7 implemented a system similar to the client’s existing one. The transaction could be performed with one click using the token obtained from WorldPay, eliminating the need for the customer to re-enter their credit card information.

  • Integration with A2B Order Management System: The client used the A2B order management system, and an infrastructure was needed to follow the order status, update it, and enter the tracking code if available.
Solution: An infrastructure designed by Optimum7 tracked order statuses using FTP, updated order statuses, and entered tracking codes if available. After creating the order, the special data (such as WorldPay token, and marketing codes) that A2B wanted to track were saved in the meta fields.

  • Automatic Coupon Code Assignment: The client wanted a system that automatically assigned a coupon code to customers on the checkout page based on a marketing code specified in the URL.
Solution: Optimum7 developed a system that automatically assigned the coupon code to its customers on the checkout page using the marketing code specified in the URL.

Each of these challenges required a tailored solution to ensure the seamless operation of the new BigCommerce store and to meet the specific needs of MedixSelect.com.

Results

The transition to the new BigCommerce store was executed seamlessly, enabling MedixSelect.com to bolster its online presence and optimize its operational efficiency. Key accomplishments included the successful implementation of a custom template design aligned with the brand’s guidelines, the integration of a trial offer page to facilitate dynamic product promotions, and the setup of the Optimum7 Connector to ensure smooth communication between BigCommerce, WorldPay, and Netsuite. Additionally, a basic admin interface was designed for order source tracking, custom daily reports were developed to aid in campaign establishment, an ongoing BA and QA retainer was established for additional support, potential API integrations with a 3PL provider were supported, and a thorough data cleanup was conducted to ensure data accuracy and integrity. Each of these elements contributed to MedixSelect.com’s online operations enhancement.

Conclusion

The BigCommerce migration and development project for MedixSelect.com was a comprehensive undertaking that encompassed several critical deliverables. These included the migration of essential data, the design of a custom template, the integration of a trial offer page, the setup of the Optimum7 Connector, the design of a tag manager admin interface, the development of custom daily reports, the establishment of an ongoing BA and QA retainer, support for potential 3PL API integrations, and a thorough data cleanup.

Despite encountering challenges such as implementing the upsell page, integrating with the A2B order management system, and automatically assigning coupon codes based on marketing codes specified in the URL, Optimum7 devised and implemented effective solutions. For instance, a special system was developed to follow the URL codes, such as “src, ref2, pc,” which played a crucial role in the reporting used when an order was taken. Additionally, an infrastructure was prepared to follow the status of the orders, update the order status, and enter the tracking code, if available, using FTP. After creating the order, special data, such as the Worldpay token and marketing codes that A2B wanted to track, were saved in the meta fields.

These strategic solutions contributed to the successful completion of the project. This resulted in a significantly enhanced online presence and optimized operational efficiency for MedixSelect.com. This successful migration and development has positioned MedixSelect.com for continued success in the online marketplace.
