Why Choose Magento?

Magento is currently the most commonly used eCommerce software in the world with an estimated 20% of all eCommerce stores using Magento. Founded in 2007, Magento was purchased by eBay and X.Commerce before it was sold, again, to Adobe in 2018.

While the recent acquisition by Adobe may mean different product offerings in the future, for now Magento comes in two forms:

  1. Magento Open Source:  Formerly known as “Magento Community Edition,” Magento Open Source is a free to use platform for you to install on your own server. This means you have to pay for domain hosting, SSL certificate, and other features that come built-in the Magento Commerce software.
  2. Magento Commerce: Magento Commerce is built for large and enterprise level businesses and offers an extensive list of out-of-the-box features. It comes with a hefty price tag, but could be worth it if you are a large company with an in-house development team. There are no standard pricing models for Magento Commerce, you must contact them for a quote.

Magento Open Source vs. Magento Commerce

In terms of licensing, the difference between Magento Open Source and Magento Commerce is simple. Magento Open Source is a non-hosted platform and is free to use, while Magento Commerce

It should be noted, however, that Magento Open Source has more than seven features. This screenshot is from Magento, who clearly wants you to purchase their Premium package. We’ll go over some of the other features Magento Open Source offers later on.

Magento Pricing

Magento Open Source is free to download and use, but factor in costs such as domain hosting, SSL, and the cost of a development team or partner agency.

Magento Commerce does not come with standardized price packages. While a trial-version does exist, you need to reach out to Magento and give them your contact information in order to use the trial. That being said, businesses who want to use Magento Commerce should expect to pay $15,000-$50,000/year.

Who Should Use Magento?

If you’re a small business looking to break into the eCommerce scene, we recommend using a different platform such as BigCommerce or Shopify, because of the high price-point and difficulty of use.

If you’re a large or enterprise-sized business with successful, established eCommerce operations, Magento might be the right solution for you. Magento is built to handle thousands of products, tons of traffic, and large amounts of sales.

Regardless of whether you choose Magento Open Source or Magento Commerce, having a development team on-site or a partner agency is essential.

Magento: Pros & Cons

  • One page checkout
  • Library free eCommerce advice
  • Allows you to control every facet of your business
  • Easy integration with third-party components
  • Secure payment gateway integration
  • A high degree of scalability with additional extensions and plug-ins
  • Buyers allowed to compare products and review them

  • Requires developer skills to get started
  • Customer support only available to the enterprise package
  • Steep learning curve
  • Need to be quoted by a Magento specialist
  • Not the platform to use for business owners just trying to launch an online store
  • Expensive if you are a small business owner

Though Magento is a well known and popular eCommerce platform for thousands of businesses it is not the platform to use if you are trying to get your feet off the ground. While there are similar technologies to enhance user experience, the technology behind Magento is highly specialized and advanced. If you are not experienced in web developing, coding, and designing you will have to hire a team of professionals to help you get started. Otherwise, you have the ability to use Magento U courses for training focused on every role in your business. Most e-commerce startups do not start with wads of cash available to invest in not only an e-commerce platform but also a team of developers.

Essentially, Magento is not for eCommerce startups or small businesses. If your team is skilled and able to handle the extensively advanced features of Magento, your company will find out how truly worthwhile Magento can be for an e-commerce platform.

Those who use Magento are not only skilled developers and designers they are also businesses that are able to meet Magento’s high fees. If your company is:

  • Looking for advanced features and extensions
  • Making revenue near the $1 million mark
  • Looking to scale toward new opportunities

The Magento Enterprise version of Magento provides hosting, PCI compliance, domain name, customer support, payment processing and more which is best suited for lagers companies rather than smaller.

If you have your own development team or have the resources available to hire a team of expert Magento developers you or rather your team will appreciate the “Magento Go” interface. The features and menu items are easy to navigate for developers and offer great resources to other plugins. Magento customers are driving revenue to the millions due to the immense package of solutions the eCommerce platform offers. Overall, Magento can provide your company with vast amounts of tools to improve your online business and your customer experience. This is only if you can support the high fees and advanced technology used on the platform.

As an open-source company, Magento does not come with many built-in themes. You can find themes of various third-party developers that are good looking and also mobile responsive. There are free themes available on these third-party sites but most are not for companies trying to eventually scale and reach new margins. You will find that most of the themes do come in packages and in these packages, you can find their own sets of advanced extensions. Choose a theme that mirrors your company image and offers the most valuable extensions for your brand.

Because we are living in what it seems to be the prime years of the digital age, there is an increasingly huge market of mobile web users to reach. If your company is not on mobile you may be losing thousands of dollars in revenue due to the gap of potential clients you are missing out on. Your company site must be mobile responsive and have the same aesthetic appeal as your desktop version. You do not need mobile users to go on your site and abandon it due to slow loading speed, massive images, and unformatted text. When searching for a Magento design it is imperative that you find a mobile-friendly design.

The real to key to success on not only Magento but all e-commerce platforms is the user. If your online customers are not satisfied with your online store and cannot navigate through it without a problem then it is time to reevaluate your strategy. You not only have to pay close attention to your backend functionality, but also the frontend features your customers will be looking at. Magento has a universe full of features you can add to enhance the user experience and mobile friendliness of your e-commerce site. Frontend usability should always be the first priority when developing your e-commerce website, Magento’s enhancing features creates a clear path to increased brand awareness, sales, and amplified customer loyalty.
