Organic Search Engine Optimization is the set of processes focused on improving and maximizing the organic visibility of a website when online searchers enter relevant keywords on any search engine.  SEO is sought out by those businesses that are not being found easily on the search engines.  Organic rankings are important because 85% of all searches performed on Google result in a click on an organic listing; in addition 68% percent of those use the first page while 98% use one of the first 3 pages.  Clearly these stats indicate that the prime real estate of Search Engine Marketing is the first pages of the major search engines, primarily Google, Bing and Yahoo.  Organic results should not be confused with the Sponsored Results that are listed generally along the right side and just above the Search Engine Result Pages or SERPs.

How to Manage Pay per Click AdsOrganic Search Engine Optimization can take many months, depending on competitive factors, to achieve top organic results.  If you are not willing or able to wait for these results, you are a strong candidate for Pay per Click (PPC) Advertising.  PPC has the strong advantages of (1) immediacy – your ads can appear virtually the same day you start right on the first page of the 3 major search engines of Google, Bing and Yahoo and (2) you don’t have to do anything to your website to get started other than creating a few landing pages.  At the same time, PPC is still keyword-targeted so that your ad only appears when those searchers are searching for those keywords you are targeting.  Further, you can display your ad at certain times of the day and in certain geographic locations … down to the zip code level.

Wikipedia defines Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.

SEM for Small Businesses

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is not reserved nor exclusive for big business.  In fact, it is the brightest light for small businesses to effectively compete in their respective markets.  It is a mistake to believe that the “big boys” know what they are doing on the internet, at least not yet.

Google and the other search engines provide the real potential to compete because all websites start from the same point.  Yes, it involves commitment, both financial and otherwise to effectively compete.  However, those who “get it” and understand the commitment involved, as well as, the ROI available by being on “Main Street” on Google (page 1), can effectively compete and win.
