Internet Marketing, Social Media and Evolution

No, I am not going to write about “Survival of the Fittest,” “The Origin of the Species” or Charles Darwin.  However, I think it’s time for a brief history lesson as a compass to the future.  It’s a matter of connecting the dots.  So check out this ever so brief timeline of the Internet, Internet Marketing and the winners online.

Early to mid ‘90’s – AOL dominates with Yahoo looming.  In a way, AOL was the first important social community and with subscriptions numbering more than 32 million out of an estimated 100 million online, AOL “owned” the internet.  Yahoo leaped onto the stage in the mid-90’s offering more in the way of content and a more “open” system not requiring any monthly fees and making a wide array of information and online functionalities available.

Understanding and Applying Content into SEO

We speak about content on a daily basis. We do this not only because Google tells us that it’s valuable, or that countless marketers keep mentioning that it’s the most important factor in SEO, but because we have great experiences with original, relevant content. We practice what we preach to our clients.  We put a lot of emphasis on content, how it’s written, how it’s stationed on a specific site, and how it’s promoted.

After all the preaching, we still get many questions from prospects and clients on content. Here’s a summary of the frequently asked questions as well as most important points;

How to Track Phone Calls on a Website

This is one of the most common problems in SEO in measuring the success of an online marketing campaign. Most of the time, marketers can track clicks and all user interaction on the site including average time spent on site, pages viewed per visit, and the bounce rate. All these stats enable the marketer to make certain adjustments if elements of the marketing strategy are not functioning correctly. Data analysis is essential for a successful internet marketing strategy. But what do you do if you have the kind of business where your clients always want to call? They do not want to fill out a form, they do not want to send you an email, and they do not want to buy a product from you; they basically want to speak to you over the phone.

Google, Personalized Search and Different Search Result Pages / Rankings

Google now displays different search result pages personalized specific for each user based on cookies, Google account preferences, history, and other determining breadcrumbs. If you want to see if a specific search result page is personalized on your computer or a client’s computer, here’s what you do;

Add this code &pws=0 to the end of Google’s search query. (Go to Google, type the search term, click search, on the search results page, add the code to the end of the URL)

Custom versus Template Design – Which is better?

That depends on your goal for your web project. We’ve never been big fans of using template designed by others since we make sure all my sites are built from the ground up to perform in the search engines.

Using custom design generates a truly unique website and also interfaces well with technologies that can give it a boost in the search engine rankings.

How Split Testing Can Increase Your Leads

Split testing is a strategy ideally implemented to increase conversion rates for a website. It can show how different variations of a website or a specific landing page can improve user behavior and interaction.  This is an essential task for every internet marketing campaign and should be adopted as an everlasting step in the ongoing optimization process.

A “Call to Action” is an identifier in acquiring conversions on a website. It’s a must-have and it’s the element that optimization using split testing revolves around. The ultimate goal is to increase the conversion rate, which could be a phone call, form submission, newsletter opt-in or a sale. Some of these conversions might have multiple steps such as a checkout for Ecommerce Sites. This makes the split testing process more complicated but also more sophisticated for the serious ecommerce business

Internet Marketing Is Marketing!

Recently I was watching a video with an interview of Matt Cutts in which he makes some interesting remarks on the direction of Google and Internet Marketing, which I happen to agree with. It was almost eerie as it sounded like a playback of recent conversations I have had with others.

First and foremost search engines have clients they NEED to satisfy. They need to be able to answer their client’s demands almost immediately. Anything less would put them behind the competition. That’s why search engines want to deliver websites that have answers to the questions they are asking. They are geared towards answering those questions.

Your Website is Already International

The primary business language of the world is English …  50% of the websites in the world are English. The potential of reaching the biggest audience at minimum cost is already in all web site owners’ hands, they just need to utilize it. Here are some pointers when focusing on a more international campaign:

Language Barriers:

Even though the primary business language of the world is English, not all your potential consumers will speak it, or clearly understand it.

Internet Marketing Services – 6-Point Checklist

Whether you are looking for Internet Marketing, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Search Engine Marketing (SEM), Paid Search Management (Pay per Click or PPC), you need to make certain that the Internet Marketing Company you are interviewing includes or excludes the following:

I.    Extensive Keyword Research – this is absolutely essential.  If you don’t know which keywords have the best potential and have the greatest relevance, you will begin your internet marketing with a shaky foundation at best.  Many think they know their keywords and they are almost always wrong.  Few recognize how many variations of words and phrases are actually used by real people who are searching for their products and services.  It is only through extensive research, using sophisticated tools and methods, can all keywords of value truly be identified and included in the online marketing plan, while those keywords with poor potential can be eliminated or deemphasized from the thrust of the plan.

Internet Marketing Tools to Stay Close to Customers

In recent writings, I have emphasized the importance of using efficient means of deploying precious marketing budget moneys during these tough economic times.  Clearly, staying close to your customers, while always important, is even more so in such an environment.  Internet Marketing again proves to be a valuable tool here.

Consider that 70% of adults are online as well as close to 98% of grade-schoolers.  The internet is now truly mass media and clearly growing in usage as measured in percent of time spent online.  A great deal of the growth in usage is due to increasingly large percentages of time spent “in the buying process.”  Adults are spending 20+% of their time online while teens and other grade-schoolers are spending an astonishing 45-55% of their available time online.
