The New Marketing Focus of General Motors

The New Marketing Focus of General MotorsThe General Motors Corporation emerged in 1931 as a leader in the US Auto industry. GM represents brands such as Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Pontiac, and Hummer among others. In earlier decades, GM was responsible for introducing the world to iconic cars like the Camaro, the Corvette, the Seville, the Firebird, and most recently, the Escalade. The problem with these cars is that although they are beautiful, they do not appeal to consumers that are feeling the effects of the economic and environmental problems that we face in our current world. GM’s lack of focus on engine efficiency and keeping customers coming back has finally, after years of inattention to market focus and overall poor management, has finally sent GM into a much publicized and very controversial bankruptcy. Innovative and dependable car manufactures like Honda and Toyota have been taking a large portion of their US market share for many years and the bankruptcy is only adding to this long standing trend.  The service, reputation, and quality of GM’s cars in recent years have declined forcing loyal US buyers to take their business elsewhere.

Why Do We Need Marketing?

Why Do We Need Marketing? For anyone who runs a business of any kind, you’ll know that the true question is not whether we need marketing, but how much do we need? A store owner can have the best products available on the market, and a top notch staff, and they will still flounder financially if no one is able to find their product. Even word of mouth is a form of marketing. It’s impossible to simply put out a great product and expect to get financial rewards. As with any business, it takes money to make money. An investment in marketing is equally, if not more important than, the investments you make inventory and staff.

Guerilla Marketing

Guerilla Marketing

Guerilla Marketing is a form of marketing through which consumers are targeted in places where they least expect.  The term guerilla is taken from “guerilla warfare” which is characterized by unexpected attacks and ambushes when and where the enemy least expects it.   *-In the marketing world, guerilla marketing is one of the most creative ways to advertise products and services.  There are many different ways one can use guerilla marketing on numerous platforms; I am surprised more companies have not caught on.  People remember things that surprise them and make them feel out of place.  Guerilla marketing is demonstrated on the streets targeting high concentrations of pedestrian traffic, roads and highways in highly trafficked locations, and even online; but all guerilla marketing locations appear  where people do not expect to be marketed to. Guerilla marketing is not meant to sell, just to spark a thought or idea that can lead one to want to buy.  Like our COO Duran Inci always says “Nobody likes to be sold, but everyone likes to buy.”

Word of Mouth Marketing

Word of Mouth Marketing

Word of Mouth marketing was essentially the first form of marketing. Before print, writing, television, radio, and other forms of modern technology the only way we were able to spread messages and knowledge was orally. This was more effective, descriptive, and elaborate than carving things into stone. People used oral traditions to pass on their messages, history, thoughts, and beliefs to each other and future generations. This is why we as humans have evolved to become great story tellers. It is in our human nature to tell each other stories and communicate with each other orally. We have since come a long way from the times when people would travel great distances to relay messages to neighboring towns, villages, and countries. Now with technology, we don’t have to worry about the old adage of “don’t kill the messenger.”

The Definition of Viral Marketing

viral-marketing

Viral Marketing is somewhat of a new strategy, being coined within the last 12 years.  The interesting thing about viral marketing is that it uses people as a medium to pass on a certain message.  The strategies come into play when people are being engaged through the message.  A good example of for viral marketing is the forward messages you get in the form of text messages and email.  One day someone thought of the idea to attach a meaning to the context, forward it to all of his or her contacts, and request that they forward it as well.  Eventually this message reached thousands of people.
