Social networking is everywhere. It is common to find parents, children, coworkers and even the elderly on the networks across the social media world on sites such as Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn. With social networks people across the world have access to tools and options that were previously non-existent. However, there are just as many new opportunities to connect as there are to get into potential danger. Social networking has opened up many new doorways for cyber-crime, and with all the people on social networks who are completely new to technology, it is more important than ever to make sure people are aware of the risks.

Security Implications of Social MediaWe usually focus on the positives that social media can bring about, but right now we are going to hop to the other side of the fence for a bit and discuss some of the dangers that can arise via social media.  Not too long ago, I was called out at work for something that was posted on my Facebook.  It wasn’t anything offensive, just one of my friends happened to go on my profile while I was logged in, and put an unsettling status about me, which made my friends think that I put it about myself.  Sure, it was all fun and games to my social circle, but when things like this get brought up at your place of business, it makes one think about the effects that social media can have on one’s life, safety, security, perceived character, and well being.

Why Do People Use Online Social Networks

Social Networking is one of the biggest crazes on the internet. People are using social network web sites such as Facebook or Myspace to reconnect with old friends from elementary school, colleagues from work, and even their favorite celebrities and musicians. But the internet has been widespread for a long time and web sites built for the purpose of profile sharing is nothing new. So why have social networks taken off so much in the last few years? When MySpace was a new website and social networking was in its’ infancy, it was normal for youngsters to add all the people in their social circles as friends on the site. Currently Facebook is so huge, it is very common to find people with networks spanning from their friends at school, to their teachers, parents, friends of the family and even their college professors. There is a clear distinction between the way we look at and use social networking now and how we did in its’ early stages. So what are the factors that have made social networks so huge and why do people use online social networks?

You can now find Pepsi’s Twitter address displayed on their cans. Facebook has also made recent headlines creating a virtual stampede when they released information on the long awaited vanity URLS for their users. On June 13, users will be able to sign up for a personalized URL otherwise known as a vanity URL instead of the current style with the nine number signatures.
