There are three basic parts to how Google returns search results for any given search. The first of these three parts is known as a crawler, also called spiders or bots, followed by indexing and then the query processor compares its indexed pages to the search query, resulting in links to pages most relevant to the query.

Neither can be relied upon alone to achieve higher search engine rankings; they are interdependent as each one can’t be effective without the other.
