Business owners who have never before considered websites or online marketing as desirable have changed their tunes quite dramatically recognizing that the cyber world is for real and now essential for any serious business marketing strategy.
Organic Search Results are indisputably the most essential element of any internet marketing approach. While organic search seems simple to understand i.e. top rankings on Google, how this is achieved is generally not understood; so what is the most difficult concept or element of internet marketing for business owners to fully grasp and understand.
The term is called “backlinks”. Backlinks are one-way links from other sites to your website. They are the ultimate popularity meter for search engines like Google and Yahoo. Owners and managers have been hearing this term a lot lately as a response to the ultimate and painful question, “Why don’t we show up on Google Search Results for our products or services?”
While the term “Backlink” might sound complicated and hard to understand, it’s actually a very basic concept that made Google’s founders multi-billionaires. So, how do backlinks relate to page rank and visibility on Google?
The formula is pretty simple; the more backlinks you have, the better. Of course there are many other identifiers but we are trying to make this as simple as possible for owners and management since they do not have time for technical details. The most important identifiers regarding backlinks are;
- Backlinks from multiple IP addresses: I might have a server and I might host hundreds of websites on my server. If I try to forward all those sites to one website to make it more popular, I literally have thousands of backlinks, right? Wrong! Google Algorithm values backlinks from different IP addressed which proves that backlinks are from different sources, thus confirming the popularity.
- Backlinks from websites with a high Page Rank (PR): Pagerank is a score that Google assigns websites between 0 and 10, 10 being the highest. Although, this does not matter as much as it used to, it’s still an important factor in increasing one’s popularity to have backlinks from sites with a higher PR.
- Relevant Backlinks: An “anchor text” is the term, which is used to link a site to another site. Usually, you see links such as “Click Here” which take you to the other site. This is a no-no. The anchor text needs to be relevant. If we were to link to our own site from another site, we would not say “Click here”, we would say “Internet Marketing Services“.
- Ongoing Backlinks: Last but not least, it’s very important that these backlinks keep increasing in number and relevance. Your competition is doing everything possible to outrank you, so you must do better. You can check out our Link Velocity Tool for information on beating the competition with backlinks.
The game is pretty simple and the formula is obvious. Backlinks matter for increased Pagerank and Visibility. Study your competition and get to work. If you need help, we are here to help. Contact us for any questions or a no obligation consultation.
