Efficiency in SEO and Internet Marketing

In our previous article we illustrated quite clearly how Internet Marketing is TRANSPARENT where traditional marketing such as Direct Mail, Print Advertising, TV & Radio, Billboards, Telemarketing are quite the opposite.

So, it would make sense that if you are dealing with a medium that is ultimately transparent and measurable, that you should be more efficient in your marketing efforts … AND … this is unquestionably true.  However there are human elements that cannot be eliminated.

The human element is mainly commitment.  Simply, here are those commitments:

Transparency in SEO and Internet Marketing

The Internet, if nothing else, is a huge tool of measurement.  Fundamentally, everything that occurs can be recorded and measured.  This fact, in and of itself, makes Internet Marketing including all of its components and sub-specialties compelling for any serious marketer in the 21st century.

All pre-Internet and many current marketers surely are aware that if, for instance, you purchase a mailing list and then send out a mailer to an audience i.e. direct mail, the only thing you surely will know is how many responses you have to the first mailer; that is, if you track it which it often times isn’t.  So, what you have here is a defined cost of marketing with relatively little visibility as to the results, the history , the ability to forecast leads, sales, profits.  Consider the questions you absolutely cannot answer:

SEO and How Googlers Google

When you Google, how do you Google?  Do you tend to type in one word, two words, more words?  If you type more than 3 words most of the time, you are in the majority.  In fact, this is a part of a trend that clearly shows that searchers are using more specific search phrases to find what they are looking for.  Almost 60% of all searches use 3 or more words and the percentage is increasing while searches using one or two keywords continue to decline.  Actually, keyword phrases of 8 words or more are increasing at the most rapid rate as of January of 2009.  It is mainly postulated that this reflects the tendency to paste text and urls directly into the search bar from other sources of content.

Online Marketing Trends

In no order of importance, here are some unmistakable trends we are seeing in online marketing:

1.    Social Media Coming of Age – the growth of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc is just staggering.   Businesses of all sizes are coming to realize that need to join the conversation and not just sit around and wait for the phone call to ring or the online form to be sent in.  The social media will prove to be an important new “voting tool” for consumers and a key source of referencing product information and real human experience.  Since the Social Media provides a hub for people to network among like-minded counterparts, colleagues, neighbors, etc, the opportunity to compare notes and information as part of the process in making purchasing and business decisions will become increasingly obvious.  Online marketers will learn that Social Media is an integral part of any SEO or Internet Marketing Strategy.  Make sure your Internet Marketing Company or SEO isn’t just talking meta tags and title tags anymore.  Deep involvement in the social media is a leading edge component of comprehensive online strategies.

Internet Marketing, Social Media and Evolution

No, I am not going to write about “Survival of the Fittest,” “The Origin of the Species” or Charles Darwin.  However, I think it’s time for a brief history lesson as a compass to the future.  It’s a matter of connecting the dots.  So check out this ever so brief timeline of the Internet, Internet Marketing and the winners online.

Early to mid ‘90’s – AOL dominates with Yahoo looming.  In a way, AOL was the first important social community and with subscriptions numbering more than 32 million out of an estimated 100 million online, AOL “owned” the internet.  Yahoo leaped onto the stage in the mid-90’s offering more in the way of content and a more “open” system not requiring any monthly fees and making a wide array of information and online functionalities available.

Internet Marketing: Especially in the Worst of Times

The Economy is bad, very bad.  GDP was just reported at close to a -4% for the last quarter of 2008.  Unemployment is above 7% and could hit the, previously unimaginable, double digits in 2009.  We are hearing of massive layoffs everyday and 5 million Americans are on the roles of government unemployment, the highest in almost 30 years.  Just last week, there were more than a half million first time unemployment claims.

Corporate Earnings have been dismal as in January more than 65% of the S&P 500 corporations reported.  While Banking and Finance were the worst reporting massive losses for Q4-2008, earnings have plummeted or even disappeared across a broad sector of the economy.

Internet Marketing – Using RSS for Your Great Content Stream

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an important tool to maximize interaction, loyalty and brand name awareness.

If your Search Engine Optimization process is resulting in great rankings, it is more than likely that you have a good steady stream of engaging and relevant content.  Now that you’ve spent so much time and money getting the visitor to the site, you want them to remain aware and at the forefront of their minds over a long period of time.

Internet Marketing Services – 6-Point Checklist

Whether you are looking for Internet Marketing, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Search Engine Marketing (SEM), Paid Search Management (Pay per Click or PPC), you need to make certain that the Internet Marketing Company you are interviewing includes or excludes the following:

I.    Extensive Keyword Research – this is absolutely essential.  If you don’t know which keywords have the best potential and have the greatest relevance, you will begin your internet marketing with a shaky foundation at best.  Many think they know their keywords and they are almost always wrong.  Few recognize how many variations of words and phrases are actually used by real people who are searching for their products and services.  It is only through extensive research, using sophisticated tools and methods, can all keywords of value truly be identified and included in the online marketing plan, while those keywords with poor potential can be eliminated or deemphasized from the thrust of the plan.
